Description The current definitions of rural areas (e.g. DEFRA) are not ideal since they take no account of different roles. It would be better to develop a better classification

A simple extension of the normal DEFRA classification is included in the Observatory's report on analysis of sub-​regional dynamics in the West Midlands. Our view is that any further work should be designed to influence national defintions rather than develop our own approach, which would then be inconsistent with wider practice.
